“Why did you do that?” Sho asked, standing in front of the man.
“I had to do it.” The other one croaked.
“Yokoyama You, 24 years old. You lived in an orphanage before you got your own apartment and started working as a social worker.” The man nodded, his gaze lowered, avoiding any eye contact with the policeman. “So there was only you in the shop and no one else was seen around and that’s why you did it?” he asked further. Yoko just nodded at him again.
Sho couldn’t see his coworkers but he could already imagine that they were only shaking their heads because of him. Even if it was already clear to everyone, even to Sho, that Yoko had done the robbery, he can’t help but doubt it. He can’t say what it was or why he was feeling this way; he just felt that something was off.
“What would you do if I’d say that you aren’t the criminal?” Sho smiled slightly when he saw the other one wincing. The reaction showed him that he hit the point. There was really something.
“I did it,” the other only repeated.
--
For now, Sho couldn’t do anything but bring him to his cell, waiting for further decision about the hearing. He looked out of the window of his office and tried to remember the crime scene.
When they arrived, Yoko was standing in the middle of the shop, the broken glass from the window around his feet, and he was breathing heavily. It was in the middle of the night so there was no one else in sight.
Sho was rubbing his temples when a sudden thought hit him.
“The door…” he murmured and started running down the corridor.
He started the car and drove until he reached the crime scene. The police officers closed the door after they finished investigating. The window was broken but there was a small hole – too small to escape from. Sho turned the key and walked into the shop. He smiled when he saw the slightly open door at the back of the room.
He walked up and pushed it open rapidly. There was a small boy sitting on the ground, his hands around his knees. There was no other way other than the front door and they closed it after the investigation so the boy had no way out.
“Who are you?” Sho stepped closer and knelt down in front of the boy.
“Shunji.” His voice was silent and his eyes were sparkling because of fear.
“Why are you here, Shunji?”
Sho could see the tears running down the boy’s face and a loud sob echoed in the room. “You broke in here, right?” Sho said, sitting down next to the boy. He waited for a few moments till he saw the boy nodding as a response. “Why?” He knew that he had to be careful with his behavior because he could see how afraid the boy was in this moment. Even though the little boy was the culprit, Sho knew that he didn’t have a bad or cruel intention behind his actions.
“I wanted to buy some Christmas presents for my friends but I have no money at all.” The boy wiped away some tears but new ones appeared immediately.
Sho stroked the boy’s head softly. “Where are your parents?”
“I live in the orphanage,” the boy whispered.
Sho just nodded. He helped the boy to stand up and drove him to the police station. He smiled slightly when he saw Yoko entering the room. Now, everything made sense. Yoko tried to hide the boy, making himself the culprit. He had always cared about the orphans and it showed this time.
“You can go now, Yokoyama-san. It’s already proved that you’re not guilty.” Sho could see a slight depression in the other one’s eyes. He could see that Yoko only wanted to help this boy; he wanted him to have a future and not go astray.
Yoko nodded sadly, patting the boy’s head and leaving him with a small sorry on his lips. He felt the fresh air touching his skin and the almost drained tears ran down his face. He wanted to help this boy, wanted to save him from being punished for a mistake that he has made, but in the end, the truth had been revealed.
--
He opened the door to his apartment, walking slowly. He sat on the couch and got lost in his thoughts till he heard the door open once more. Turning his head a bit, he smiled at the figure walking up to his place.
“I knew you didn’t do it. It couldn’t be you who broke in there.”
“I wanted to help him,” he said, moving a bit to give the other some space to sit on.
“I know but it’s not your fault. You aren’t there to get punished for other people’s mistakes.” A soft hand stroked Yoko’s head, making him sob again. The other pulled Yoko to his arms so that he can rest his head on the other’s chest.
“I saw myself in him. He was like— I felt sorry,” he said, still sobbing.
“I know. It’s okay.” Yoko looked up and saw Sho smiling at him before the latter bent down and placed a soft kiss on Yoko’s lips.
